If you know me at all, you know that I am 100% completely obsessed with Instagram. I think it is the best social media platform ever to exist and it is really what inspired me to start taking pictures.
Over the past year or so I decided to really dedicate myself to increasing my audience on Instagram. It is an amazingly powerful tool that I think everyone should utilize. Here are a few things that I picked up along the way that allowed me to gain a 100 or so followers per month.
1. Know Your Audience
My Instagram is almost completely based around my photography, which is why I try to limit the selfies. That way people know what to expect from me when they start following me.
2. Be Consistent
I'm sure you've heard this one before, but it is the best advice I can give you. I usually aim for at least one post a day that stays true to my photography theme.
3. Follow Others
When I first started out I made sure that I was following other photographers and accounts that were similar to mine. People will be more keen to check out your account and/or follow you if you are posting similar stuff to them.
4. Take the Time to Edit
Instagram is obviously focused completely around images. Take the time to clean up your feed and make sure everything looks cohesive. The way your photos are laid out will be the first impression so you want to make sure that not only your individual pictures look good, but your whole feed looks nice together.
5. No White Borders
This has become especially easier with Instagram's newest update. Now you can post the entire photo without putting those unnecessary white borders around your image. I am personally not a fan of borders unless all your images have it because it disrupts the "flow" of your work.
6. Be Active
Comment on other people's posts and make sure you respond to people's comments on your own photos. You don't want to be unresponsive to your followers; interact with them and those whose work you admire.
7. Know Your Schedule
I try to post around 7 pm in the evening because I've noticed that is when my followers are most active. Notice when people are online and plan ahead. Posting at 7 am might not be the call because most people will be asleep, whereas at 7 pm people will more likely be home for the day.
8. Dedicate Yourself
I try to take a few minutes out of my day to just be really active on Instagram. You can't expect to just upload a photo and have the followers come flowing in. Take the time to really be active and apply all the above tips. Growing a dedicated following is never easy, but with consistency and quality content, you'll be on your way.
Until next time,
